Pinch Back Basil to Boost Harvest

The red lines above indicate where to cut stems to assure a good harvest of basil.  Every time you pinch back a stem to a pair of buds, each bud will produce another pair of stems, doubling what was before.  Once basil flowers, it will stop producing new leaves,  so don’t let it flower.  Put the pruned leaves in water and keep at room temperature until you are ready to use them.  If you are unlikely to use the leaves in the next day or two, you can  suspend the chopped leaves in a little water in an ice cube tray before freezing.  Use the basil cubes in soups, stews, sauces, etc.
