What’s With That Apple Tree?!

AppleGraft'15 We had a long, cold winter with lots of snow-cover. Short on food, a hungry critter “girdled” the crab apple tree that had been planted in Cindy Heath’s honor. (Cindy was the former director of the Lebanon Recreation Dept.) Was there any chance that this tree could survive? As luck would have it, Cindy’s friend Henry Homeyer, the Valley News “Gardening Guy”, was willing to try. Henry and a friend with grafting experience, created a bridge graft in an attempt to create connection between the leaves and the roots. Will it work? The tree is leafing out. Henry says that is to be expected; it might take several years for the tree to die. But maybe the tree will survive . . . gardening is about hope, right?
