Winter Rye/Hairy Vetch: Cover Crop Experiment

Sifting top soil to cover the seeds

Our customary practice of putting gardens to bed with blankets of chopped leaves, is being questioned; would those leaves be contaminated with jumping worm cocoons? A few of us have opted to experiment with a cover crop of winter rye and hairy vetch as an alternative. The cover crop will provide nitrogen and organic matter to the soil and will serve as mulch in next year’s garden. (The vetch fixes nitrogen; rye adds organic matter and protects the less-hardy vetch from winter damage.)
